The Story Behind the Song
So many times I feel like being an adult just takes so much energy away from what our true Spirit needs to thrive. When our Associate Pastor asked me to sing a special song for “Children’s Sunday,” I decided I would write one for the occasion, and the Scripture she was using was Matthew 19:14 about coming to Jesus like a child, because “heaven belongs to those who are like these.” This song isn’t just about how God wants us to be with Him, it’s also about all of our struggles to be able to do it.
“Like A Child” by Randall Everitt
Like a child, let me come to You, Father.
Like a child, let me run to You now.
Like a child, let me ask for forgiveness.
Like a child, let me love You somehow.
As we grow older, we try so hard
to do things on our own.
We've put away (so many) childish things,
God's just one more thing that we've outgrown.
But since we've become so wise,
we've somehow forgotten how to compromise.
Don't let me wait, until it's too late
to be weak enough, to come back home.
Like a child, let me come to You, Father.
Like a child, let me run to You now.
Like a child, let me ask for forgiveness.
Like a child, let me love You somehow.
Don't let me be selfish and stubborn.
Open my heart, will You please?
God help me to become humble
and run to You on my knees.
Like a child, let me come to You, Father.
Like a child, let me run to You now.
Like a child, let me ask for forgiveness.
Like a child, let me love You somehow.
Like a child, let me come to You, Father.
Like a child, let me run to You now.
Like a child, let me ask for forgiveness.
Like a child, let me love You somehow.
Like a child, let me love You somehow.
Like a child, let me love You somehow.
