The Story Behind the Song
This song came about because I was feeling just overwhelmed & burdened by the fact that I was NEVER going to live up to the standard that Jesus’s actions set for us…and was really discouraged. Then, as I was writing it, I realized that Jesus Himself IS the Standard-bearer, and his example was intended to free us from trying to do it on our own, not to judge us for how little we live up to it. At the same time, I felt like I was being held up (intimidated & frozen) in life by a standard that I was never going to live up to, no matter how hard I kept trying…& held up (buoyed & strengthened) by the Standard of all goodness & righteousness, strengthened by his Presence in my life…THAT’s what I’m talking about!
“The Standard” by Randall Everitt
Every second chance I get I see a little light.
Then, I know I’m to believe the track I’m on is right.
Not only by myself I’m led, with me His feet will surely tread,
‘cause I am being held up by “The Standard.”
Every time that I’m in pain I cry out to know why.
Then I’m reminded of the tears that He shed when He died.
My burden seems so much to bear, but my share cannot compare,
to what He did for me, ‘cause He’s “The Standard.”
The standard for what I believe, no greater love can I conceive,
and I know that He’ll always be… “The Standard”.
In my life I hope that my wife sees my love is real.
And I hope the love in my eyes shows the way I feel.
But what I feel and what she sees, can only be as good as me.
It’s His love and Spirit that’s “The Standard.”
The standard for what I believe, no greater love can I conceive,
and I know that He’ll always be… “The Standard”.
The standard for what I believe, no greater love can I conceive,
and I know I’m a child of Thee.
Your mercies have been granted me,
But what You are I cannot be,
‘cause I know that You’ll always be...”The Standard.”
